Never Judge a Gift By It’s Wrapping

It has been said that we should never judge a book by its cover. During this gift giving season I want to remind us that we should never judge a gift by its wrappings! The most expensive, the most planned and thoughtful gift ever offered to this world was placed in an old manger for a box and wrapped in lowly swaddling clothes but as we start to unwrap this precious gift we find it is tied with red ribbons dipped in the blood of the greatest love mankind has ever known.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life

As Isaac Newton writes

“Were the whole realm of nature mine,

That were a present far too small;

Love so amazing, so divine,

Demands my soul, my life, my all.”

Is He Being Born in You This Christmas?

After Mary’s 3 month stay with her cousin Elizabeth, when Mary returned to her home she was “showing”. Those in whom Christ is formed will show it, it will be found to be a work of God which He will own. (Matthew Henry Commentary)
During your Christmas devotion time reflect on the above thought – Are you “showing” to your family and friends that Christ is being formed in you?

“One Solitary Life”

“ONE SOLITARY LIFE” by James Allan Francis is my favorite Christmas devotion and I pray it will also bless you.

He was born in an obscure village,
The child of a peasant woman.
He grew up in still another village,
Where he worked in a carpenter shop
Until he was thirty.

Then for three years
He was an itinerant preacher.
He never wrote a book.
He never held an office.
He never had a family or owned a house.
He didn’t go to college.
He never visited a big city.
He never traveled two hundred miles
From the place where he was born.
He did none of the things
One usually associates with greatness.
He had no credentials but himself.

He was only thirty-three
When the tide of public opinion turned against him.
His friends ran away.
He was turned over to his enemies.
And went through the mockery of a trial.

He was nailed to a cross
Between two thieves.
While he was dying,
His executioners gambled for his clothing,
The only property he had on Earth.
When he was dead,
He was laid in a borrowed grave
Through the pity of a friend.

Twenty centuries have come and gone,
And today he is the central figure
Of the human race,
And the leader of mankind’s progress.

All the armies that ever marched,
All the navies that ever sailed,
All the parliament that ever sat,
All the kings that ever reigned,
Put together have not affected
The life of man on Earth
As much as that ONE SOLITARY LIFE

Light up the Meaning of Christmas

As believers we become disturbed when we see society commercialize this wonderful season. It is being secularized by stores selling “holiday” trees instead of “Christmas” trees and even store clerks having to say “Happy holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas”.

We get frustrated and upset when local townships decide not to celebrate and honor the birth of Christ with a Nativity scene in the township squares and public places and yet many churches neglect to use this opportunity to display a Nativity scene outside or even inside their churches. What is wrong with this picture? What do you think?

Yes, of course, I decorate my tree and house with lights but I try to put the emphasis on the Christ of Christmas with a large Nativity display in the front of our home. Praying that this witnessing tool will remind our neighborhood that there is more to Christmas than Santa Claus and reindeers.

Was This Your Black Friday Chaos?

The following word the Lord gave me several years ago rings again in my ears as the cash registers begin to incessantly ring with crowds at the mall increasing and parking a car almost impossible.

Dear Child,
The pressure and stress that robs you of the joy of the season, has been manufactured by man, and has led man into slavery, when this season was to set men free from the bondage of this world. The angels cry “joy to the world” not “stress to the world”. Do not try to package My gift in wrapping paper of stress tied up with a bow of pressure! My gift came wrapped in joy and tied with love. May the joy of the season overflow from your heart as you extend your arms as ribbons of love to others.
Thus saith Papa
