He Was God’s Brazen Serpent

John 3:14-15 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

How often have we read this scripture without seeing with spiritual eyes the depth of the meaning when Jesus made this reference to Himself?

Numbers 21:8-9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

To fully comprehend the depth we need to see through the eyes of typology. When we study types or shadows from the Old Testament we understand that when we see “brass” mentioned in the Word it is referring to “judgement”.

This brazen serpent was a type of the Lord Jesus being judged for our sins. This I could see and understand why it was brazen. But I questioned why a serpent? Wouldn’t a brazen angel have been more appropriate?

The Holy Spirit brought the 20/20 spiritual vision I needed to understand the reason for a serpent to represent the Lord Jesus. A serpent represents sin and He became sin for us!

2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

What a revelation adding depth to John 3:14. He was lifted up as God’s Brazen Serpent and whosoever looks to Him and believes will be healed and restored to a relationship with God.

CHALLENGE: Even as the Israelites were bitten by fiery serpents because of rebellion, we also are all bitten by the fiery serpent of sin because of rebellion against God. But like Israel we will be spiritually healed when we look unto Jesus, the fulfillment of:

God’s Brazen Serpent Lifted up on a Cross.

It is interesting to note this is the symbol throughout the world as the medical symbol for healing, a serpent on a pole!

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

When I survey the wondrous cross

On which the Prince of glory died,

My richest gain I count but loss,

And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,

Save in the death of Christ my God!

All the vain things that charm me most,

I sacrifice them to His blood.

See from His head, His hands, His feet,

Sorrow and love flow mingled down!

Did e’er such love and sorrow meet

Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine,

That were a present far too small;

Love so amazing, so divine,

Demands my soul, my life, my all.

How Often Do We Still Deny Him Today?

We were not there the day Peter denied the Lord but so often we are denying that we know Him by our actions, words and choices.

Matthew 26:74 Then began Peter to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man.

Dear Father

Help me in my daily walk, that I will not deny your presence in my life by my actions and words before the world.

Dear Child,

It is not so easy to deny Me while in My presence in the Holy Place. The test is when you leave that presence to walk in the Outer Court, where you mix with the world. Remember it was before sinners that Peter denied Me!

Many worship Me in church but the test comes when they leave My house! It is not how high you jump before Me, but how straight you walk in the Outer Court. Many swear their love for Me in My presence, but when the test comes in the Outer Court, they deny Me by their actions and words!

                                          Thus saith Papa

1 John 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven

Remembering His Agony in Gethsemane

We are often exhorted in the Word that we should not faint, be weary, or lazy, especially when it comes to our time with the Lord. Nothing pierces my heart more than the account in the Garden of Gethsemane, when the disciples fall asleep during one of the greatest spiritual battles ever fought, during our Lord’s agony in the Garden the night before His crucification.

And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? Couldest not thou watch one hour? Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak (Mark 14:37-38).

We were not there in the Garden, but how often have we grown weary, and fallen asleep in the midst of spiritual battles? The Bible warns us therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

In the book of Genesis we read of Abraham being willing to sacrifice Isaac, his son of promise on the altar, if God required it of him. There follows I believe one of the clearest words of prophecy in all of Scripture looking forward to Calvary.

Genesis 22:8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide HIMSELF a lamb for a burnt offering.

Not only was God going to provide a lamb, He was going to provide HIMSELF as that Lamb.

2 Corinthians 5:7 For God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself.

Yes, there was a lamb that day provided to take the place of Isaac BUT what is more important to you and me today is there was a Lamb that was provided to take our place.

Hebrews 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

Genesis 22:11 Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place JEHOVAH JIREH
